What is Waves of Confidence: Unplug & Surf for Youth?
When middle and high schoolers first arrive at the beach for a Waves of Confidence clinic, you can often feel the quiet nerves in the air. In a world dominated by screen time, text boxes, and social media, in-person connection can feel intimidating for today's youth.
That is exactly why Waves of Confidence exists. We combine ocean surf instruction with hands-on youth life coaching right on the shores of Isle of Palms, SC, to help teens break out of their shells, build real-world communication skills, and discover their inner strength.
Here is a look inside what actually happens during our 2-hour pop-up clinics—and why the transformation is so magical.
Unpacking the Screen Habit & Breathwork
We always start our morning on the sand in a beachside coaching circle. We open up by talking about technology—specifically how relying on phones and technology creates habits that actually make it harder to connect in person. When we spend all our time communicating behind screens, we miss out on practicing essential face-to-face communication skills like active listening, eye contact, and reading body language.
To settle into our bodies and prepare for the ocean, we dive into guided breathwork. We talk about real-life pressure points—like test anxiety, social stress, or classroom nerves—and practice actionable breathing techniques that teens can take home to calm their nervous system whenever life gets overwhelming.
Breaking Out of the Shell: Real Peer Connection
This is where the magic starts. By creating a safe, encouraging environment, we challenge them to step outside their comfort zone. Seeing kids who were quiet and nervous at the beginning start interacting, opening up, and realizing they aren't alone in these feelings is one of the most rewarding parts of this program.
We break off into small groups so everyone gets a chance to meet each other and open up. We ask them to get honest with questions like: How do you actually feel after spending hours on your phone? What don't you like about technology? What words describe that feeling?
Confidence Building
Then, we hit the water! Surfing is the ultimate teacher for emotional resilience because paddling into a wave requires courage, presence, and trusting yourself.
Throughout the morning, those initial nerves completely melt away.
Cheering Each Other On
The beach fills with high-fives, laughter, and participants cheering each other on as they catch waves and wipe out together. By tackling something hard in the ocean, peer connections form naturally without any screens in the way.
The 1-to-10 Energy Shift & Words of Empowerment
To wrap up our 2 hours together, we form a final floating circle right in the ocean to end on a high note.
At the very start of the morning, I ask each participant to think of a number from 1 to 10 describing their confidence and energy level. By the end of our ocean circle, almost every single participant calls out a 9 or a 10!
We ask everyone to share one word describing how they feel after doing something hard and stepping outside their comfort zone. The words they call out say it all:
Proud
Excited
Cool
Adventurous
Exotic
Watching that level of transformation happen in just 2 hours is truly magical. That is what this is all about: helping youth realize their own inner strength, build real confidence through human connection, and prove to themselves that they can do hard things.
